Today’s Reading: John 12:20-26
“I assure you: Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces a large crop.“
Reflection: Those who follow Jesus are the ones who see Jesus for Who He truly is. These are the ones who remain with Him into eternity. As Jesus’ Crucifixion approaches, He continues to prepare His disciples for what is to come. He wants them to understand that His Death will be His Way of Salvation for all people. “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces a large crop.” His Death is necessary for the life of the world. In order for eternal life to be available for all, Jesus must give His own life.
For the Greeks that come wanting to see Jesus, their reason is unknown. Perhaps they are curious about Him. Maybe they have come to be taught by Him, or to see the One who has performed great miracles. But Jesus makes clear that His glory will be known most clearly by His Death. This is what He wants people to see and know about Him, that He would willingly give His life and save all who believe Him by it.
Those who seek Jesus the Great Teacher can be convinced of His unmatched Wisdom. Those who seek Jesus the Advocate can be assured of His Compassion. And Jesus surely embodies these attributes. But those who seek Jesus the Crucified Messiah are poised to find His Divinity, Power, and Love. The Crucified Messiah is Jesus in His Glory: the only One Who saves.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, all Glory be to You for the great Love and Power that You have shown on the Cross at Calvary. Thank You for willingly giving Your Life for my Salvation. Thank You for willingly paying the price it cost to redeem me from sin. In prayer and in study, help me to see You more and more in the light of Your Glory at the Cross, that I would never forget Who You truly are: my God and my Savior. I pray these things in Your Precious Name, AMEN.
